Nanjing

Well, we are back in Shanghai now, about to go out and do some sightseeing around the olde French Concession (and hoping its not a huge tourist trap)

Time to update you on our travels, now that we can load images!
We visited Alis sister, Viv, for a week in Nanjing, staying with her in her apartment. It was cool, and she made us feel very welcome.

We visited Zhonghua Gate, a gate in the old city walls. They could hide 3000 soldiers inside it, and surprise some poor enemy. Its huge!

Here are some rocks they used to drop on attackers heads!

While in Nanjing, we helped Viv teach a couple of her classes for young people learning English. It was great fun for both of us, we really enjoyed interacting with them, and were made to feel they centre of attention!

As in other cities, we have enjoyed eating out on the streets here. This man and some women were making and cooking Jiaozi right outside the gates of the school Viv teaches at. They were very friendly, and the food was very yummy! mmmmmm!

As with other cities we have visited, Nanjing is "under construction" There are demolition and building sites everywhere you look. It rained while we were there, so some of the sites had turned to mud. Here's a group of guys digging close to a new subway entrance:

This has been a very interesting place to visit. I went to a memorial to the victims of the Nanjing massacre, something I had never heard about until coming here. Unfortunately the memorial was closed! So I didn't get to see the full picture, but just reading about it is awful. It looks back to a invasion in the late 1940s, when Japanese troops slaughtered something like 300,000 Nanjing civilians. I was pretty disappointed the place was closed. Maybe I can see it next visit.

Enough for now! Ali has plans for a Nanjing post too. Will leave something for her to update you on.
Looking forward to catching up with travelers to Shanghai. See you in a couple of days.
